The first time I laid eyes on her, I saw her humanity beneath the careful layers, despite the disguise, and wondered how this child, this frail human female, could hold against what would come. And I doubted my Commander, and his ability to lead the Alliance to victory.

Neither for the first time, nor would it be the last, as events have since shown.

How was it he had come to consider food could do what so many others were not able to? I admit, I was perplexed, confused until he explained her lineage, and then the subterfuge became clear. This small raptor would be our banner, a flower in the desert for all of Wraith to cleave to, for all of Wraith to worship.

And of course, they have, and do.

As do I...

ISOLATE
I REMEMBERED SEEING A(N)...

I stepped through the gate onto Hanka today and immediately remembered seeing a picture of a child standing in the middle of a city street in one of  the worn torn countries of the middle East.  The desolation, the eerie silence that translated even through print.  I could feel her isolation, her fear.  I wanted nothing more than to pick her up and snuggle her to my breast; to keep her safe and offer her a security she'd most likely never known.

And then I met Cassandra.

My heart broke for her.  The only survivor of what surely had been a war - I mean what else could have wiped out an entire village AND a SG team?!

It brought to mind - again - the picture of the middle eastern child.  And stirred that maternal, "must protect her", instinct in me.  And I knew, come hell or high water, Sam and I were going to do whatever it took to protect this child.  To give her a chance at a "normal" life.

My job brings me a lot of stress and sadness.  A lot of blood, guts and gore.  It's really easy for me to isolate myself.  To let it take over and overwhelm me. To make me feel shell shocked and scared; hopeless.

Helping Cassie...having her in my life, in my home, has given me a ray of light in the darkness.

Together, we will heal.  We will grow.  We will keep on fighting.

Happy New Year all you Stargate writers out there, and thanks for sticking with us through the latter half of last year when it seemed like we all dropped off the face of the planet. Maybe we all found our way to the Pegasus Galaxy, (or dare I say it, Destiny), for real.

Anyway, as they say, new year, new start... I'll be reviewing things in the next couple of weeks, and would be very appreciative if all of our current writers would either post for their characters, or at the very least PM the admin here to let me know if you will be continuing with writing for them in 2011. At the Beginning of February, I will be updating the availability list to reflect current writing opportunities.

Which brings me to a question or two.

Stargate: Universe... love it or loath it, it is still a part of the Stargate franchise, and as such, the question becomes, do we invite writers of SGU characters to participate in the blog? To be fair, we should, but how do our members feel? Please weigh in with your opinion by participating in the poll below, and feel free to comment on this entry too. :)

How do you feel about including Stargate Universe on the blog?

Sure, let's include SGU in our blog family.
4(57.1%)
I'd rather not include SGU just now.
2(28.6%)
We could maybe include SGU if... (please qualify with a comment)
1(14.3%)

Next - we need writers people, because in a place like this, the more the merrier! Perhaps our current members would be interested in taking on a second character, or you have a friend that would like to have a go... invite them on over. I will be making the blog more visible, in places like the SGA newsletter, and such to try and attract more writers (and readers), so feel free to pimp the community on your own blog/website - wherever you'd like.

Okay, enough from the voice of Admin - I'll be posting the first prompts of 2011 in the next post, and PMing you all to let you know about it too :)

Happy writing!

But we're anxious to get things up and running again.

If you're a current member, please take a moment to check in and say whether you're still interested in participating, so that we can update the list and open the blog to new members/characters.

If you're a new or prospective member, please get in touch, with your chosen character's journal, and we'll get you approved and signed up.

I'll be posting new prompts shortly, so watch out for them... also, any outstanding banners/icons (I think there may be one, or two), will be sent to the members as soon as we can.

We looks forward to reading and voting on new entries very soon.
